How to Report a Bug Effectively

Found something that doesn't work right? We want to fix it! A well-written bug report helps us find and resolve the issue much faster.

Please include the following information:

  1. What happened? Describe what you saw (error message, wrong result, broken layout, etc.)
  2. What did you expect? What should have happened instead?
  3. Steps to reproduce: How can we see the same problem? Be as specific as possible:
  4. Which page were you on?
  5. What did you click or enter?
  6. In what order?
  7. Tournament ID (if applicable): This is the most important piece of information for tournament-related bugs. You'll find it in your dashboard or in the URL.
  8. Browser and device: Which browser are you using? (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge?) Desktop or mobile?
  9. Screenshots: A picture is worth a thousand words. If you can capture the error, please attach it.

Example of a good bug report:

  1. Title: Wrong Buchholz calculation in round 5
  2. What happened: Player #12 shows Buchholz 18.5 but I calculated manually and it should be 19.0
  3. Expected: Buchholz should be 19.0
  4. Steps: Go to tournament ID 4567, open standings after round 5, check player #12
  5. Browser: Chrome 120, Windows 11

What happens after you report?

We investigate every bug report. If we need more information, we'll reply in the thread. Once the fix is deployed, we'll update the thread and mark it as resolved.

Thank you for helping us improve ChessPairings.org!
