How to Set Up a Round Robin Tournament

Round Robin tournaments (where every player plays every other player) are ideal for small groups, club championships, and qualification events.

When to use Round Robin:

  1. Up to ~14 players (beyond that, the number of rounds becomes impractical)
  2. When you want every player to face every other player
  3. Club championships, league matches, closed qualification tournaments

How to create one:

  1. Create a new tournament
  2. Select "Round Robin" as the tournament type
  3. Add all players
  4. The system generates the full schedule automatically (Berger tables)

Key differences from Swiss:

  1. All pairings for all rounds are generated at the start
  2. Color allocation follows the standard Berger rotation
  3. Tiebreaks are typically: Sonneborn-Berger → Direct Encounter → Number of Wins
  4. There's no pairing engine decision per round — it's all pre-determined

Double Round Robin:

If you want each player to face every other player twice (once with white, once with black), select "Double Round Robin." This doubles the number of rounds but ensures perfect color balance.

Handling withdrawals in Round Robin:

If a player withdraws, all their remaining games are scored as forfeit wins for the opponents. Their already-played results stand. This is why Round Robin works best when you're confident all participants will complete the event.
